Layla – a mixture of review and summary (SPOILER FREE)

Book : Layla
Author: Colleen Hoover

Layla is a gripping read which keeps the readers on their toes the whole time. This book is in a disparate genre from Colleen Hoover’s usual rom-com.

William Shakespeare wrote on love as

“…it is an ever-fixed mark

That looks on tempests and is never shaken;”.

This story finely depicts the intensity of true love that paves the way for the protagonists to achieve improbable things.

Okay, let's dive into the story !

The bride’s sister Layla dances hysterically to the band playing at the wedding to entertain the band’s disinterested low-profile bass player Leeds Gabriel. They meet at the pool at night and feel an immediate connection. They stay at the bread-and-breakfast for a couple of days and subsequently, Layla moves in with him.

One day, Leeds posts a picture with Layla on his Instagram. Having a public account, he receives several backlashes for his post and so he deletes it. But it was too late. His ex-girlfriend Sable who's obsessed with him appears at their door and shoots Layla on her head and Leeds on his shoulders. Leeds guns her down back. Though Layla survives, she suffers partial amnesia and develops anxiety.

To comfort her, Leeds takes her for a vacation to the bread-and-breakfast where they first met. It was put up for sale by the owner. Leeds rents it for two weeks for a recovering holiday but he experiences all nerve-racking bizarre happenings in their initial stay. His boredom with his life with sick Layla makes him curious about the occurrences that result in his discovery of a spirit called Willow. He finds ways to communicate with Willow and eventually allows her to get into Layla’s body. Though guilt trips him, he offers to help Willow to figure out who she is.

Meanwhile, Leeds and Willow develop feelings for each other and they talk every night by letting Willow into Layla’s body.

When it's time for them to leave, Leeds discovers that Willow is Sable. Despite having resentment towards Willow (Sable), he agrees to help her at the cost of keeping Layla captive. A spirit like Willow from a paranormal forum helps them uncover the truth about Willow and Layla which is the staggering twist in the story.

After several realisations and discoveries, Leeds unites with his Layla by carrying out a well-crafted plan.

Read the book to find out who Willow actually is, how Leeds unites with Layla and what happens to Sable.

Colleen Hoover as usual turns the readers’ blood cold with surprising twists and soul-stirring lines. The readers are guaranteed to be carried into the story and experience the characters’ emotions themselves.

Happy reading folks !
